Taboo Talks: Period Positivity

Hello and welcome back to The Influencer Blog. We are so excited to be starting a new series on our blog today, 'Taboo Talks', breaking all things we are too scared to discuss in everyday life. We hope you enjoy and be sure to let us know what you think!

For some reason, periods are still a taboo topic, but we want to smash the stereotype and make it a regular cocktail date topic - something us girls don't need to be ashamed of.

We're pretty sure that every girl has a cringe period story, it's part of our journey to womanhood. But is it necessary for us to hide away from our menstrual woes? And be discreet about our period products as if they are contraband?

The answer is NO!

Periods happen, every month, for the majority of a woman’s life. So why don’t we feel comfortable talking about it?!

We learn to feel embarrassed about our periods from a young age. "Must be her time of the month" is common phrase heard in society - yuck! The red flags began when the boys were sent out of the classroom when discussing the menstrual cycle, now this must definitely start a stigma! At some point we've all tried to hide a pad or tampon up our sleeve on our way to the loo, most women have periods and use sanitary products, so what are we all hiding from? To boys/men periods are a mysterious, secretive, disgusting time of the month. If this is what we're taught from a young age, then there's no surprise they grow into men who feel it's inappropriate to talk about periods.

We've teamed up with the brand Flo (@hereweflo on Instagram) and their ethos is to spread positivity around the 'taboo'. With a wide range of products available from liners, to tampons, to pads and other products coming soon. Flo can bring all your period needs to your front door through their subscription service or you can find them in big retailers such as Boots, Urban Outfitters, Morrisons, Holland & Barrett, Planet Organic and Ocado - all at an affordable price. All of their products are organic, vegan, cruelty free, biodegradable - the list goes on. 5% of profits go to Orchid Project who are fighting against Female Genital Cutting (aka FGM) and they also make monthly donations of FLO products to various charities fighting against period poverty. What’s not to love?!

We also love the fact you only need to buy one product from Flo to cater to your entire period - you get night time and day time pads in one package, or super and normal tampons in one package - why has no one else thought of this before?! Saves a lot of time and money.

Flo have kindly gifted us some of their products, and when it's our time of the month, we can't wait to try it out (we will be sure to do a full review on our IG stories so keep an eye out for that) - although they have already been recommended to us by friends who have sang nothing but their praises! The average woman is said to use around 11,000 sanitary products in their lifetime, so why not make them cute, affordable and organic?!

I’m not sure about you, but here at The Influencer, we turn into chocolate and sweet obsessed gals when it’s our time of the month. Flo’s ice-cream shaped packaging is centred around those sweet cravings we get when we are on, and a cute ice-cream package sits a lot cuter on my bathroom cupboard than a regular box of tampons. Although, I’m actually surprised it hasn’t ended up in the freezer because my boyfriend has mistaken it for actual ice cream (lol).

Let's be honest, for some of us, having a period can be a negative experience, it's not exactly the most pleasant thing. Hormones are up and down; mood is up and down, and the cramps come out to play. BUT this is something that everyone needs to understand, and the reason we need to make sure that period positivity is something that we normalize. Our bodies are literally going through ~trauma~.

Flo have very kindly given us a discount code for all you gals wanting to try out their products, so use code 'TRYMELUVME' for 15% off your first order on their website here: https://www.hereweflo.co.uk.

Let this blog post be the first step in YOU being period positive.

Thank you so much to Flo for working with us on this blog post. Be sure to check out their super cute Instagram feed here.

We hope you've enjoyed the first instalment in our new series Taboo Talks, be sure to check us out on Instagram (@thelnfluencer).

Lots of love,

Beth & Lizzie Xx
