Meet Emily Rose Fisher - the graduate obsessed with fashion and all things beauty!

Hello and welcome back to The Influencer Blog, we would just like to say a massive thank you for 600 followers over on our Instagram page, we are honestly so overwhelmed with all the love and support we have received since we started this blog back in May!

This week we are bringing you a good old interview-style post, and we have spoken to the lovely Emily Rose Fisher (@emilyrosefisher on Insta) about all things graduate life and YouTube/Instagram.

For those of you who don't know Emily, she is 23 years old and has just graduated from Solent University with a first-class honours degree in Beauty Promotion. Emily has been creating content for YouTube for around 6 years now and has since joined Sharp Talent and is earning a part-time wage from her social media platforms.

Emily said: "I started up my YouTube channel back in 2014 as a hobby after spending all of my spare time watching the ‘big YouTubers’ back in the day such as Zoella, Tanya Burr and Sprinkle of Glitter. It wasn’t something I put much thought into, I just picked up a camera one day and filmed a video, and the rest is history!

"I didn’t really give it too much thought, I just randomly filmed a video one day and plucked up the courage to upload it. Considering I started my channel whist at school, I did have to deal with a lot of people trying to make me feel embarrassed about it and teasing me, but I just ignored them and I’m definitely glad I didn’t stop because of irrelevant opinions."

With nearly 30,000 subscribers on YouTube, and over 5,000 followers on Instagram, we asked Emily how she has found growing her platforms on social media: "I have found it difficult to build a following on Instagram and in the grand scheme of things, my following is still very low. I’ll admit, I don’t spend a great deal of time working on my Instagram page and I much prefer to use my spare time filming videos for my YouTube channel; I find it a lot more rewarding. I could gain more of a following on Instagram if I dedicated more time to it, but I quite enjoy that I mostly use it to document my life with no added pressure to upload regularly!"

After studying Beauty Promotion at University, we asked Emily what her plans for the future are, and if she thinks she will use her degree along with her social media work: "I would like to think that my degree will be put to use in the future and help me get to where I want to be career wise, however I am not putting too much pressure on myself at this moment in time because of the current pandemic and the effect it has had on the industry.

"Also, I do believe that within the digital world, a lot of the time it’s about who you know and can also be down to luck. I’m currently looking for any job to pay my bills and then in a year or two I will go back to my original plan of moving to London and trying to ‘make it’ in my industry up there.

"I’m sure I will still be doing YouTube in the next five years; I cannot imagine stopping for any reason. However, I’ve always said I wouldn’t want to make it my full-time career, purely because it can be quite a lonely job and I see myself working in an environment surrounded by other like- minded creatives. I will always have YouTube and social media as a back up plan and part-time job, but I would love to be able to put my degree to good use and get a job in the field that I’m interested in (PR & marketing for beauty).

"I honestly loved every second of university and if I could go back and do it all over again, I’d jump at the chance. A few highlights that come to mind were living in halls, meeting some of my best friends and I can’t lie, going out drinking almost every night of the week without a care in the world.

"As much as I thoroughly enjoyed my uni experience, there were a few negatives such as not liking the city I lived in; Southampton isn’t for me. I also had a bad experience in second year when I moved into a shared house with 4 other girls that I didn’t know very well (bad idea)."

Finally, we asked Emily for some advice she would give to people who are starting university in September, and those who are wanting to start doing social media work: "It’s completely normal to feel nervous before starting university, after all it is a big step and a new chapter in your life! I can understand that it would be even more nerve-wracking starting this year with the pandemic going on, but just remember everyone is in the same boat and if you’re ever feeling a little unsure, remind yourself why you wanted to go in the first place.

"You’ve probably worked really hard to get into university so try and turn those nerves into excitement, because I’m pretty positive you’re going to have the best time! Looking back at my university experience, I can safely say that they were the best years of my life, so far.

"And for those wanting to start doing social media, I would say go for it! If you want to do something, and you feel passionate about it, don’t let anybody stop you. But, I must warn you that if you’re wanting to start a channel or working on your social media, don’t do it for the money, because it takes a super long time to get to a stage where money can be earned. You have to be passionate about it and start it for the right reasons, because it is very time consuming!"

Thank you so much to Emily for speaking to us, we hope you've enjoyed this post! As always if you have any other posts you would like to see on our blog, DM us on our Instagram which you can find here: https://www.instagram.com/thelnfluencer/
